The White Pine Region Scouting for Food Challenge February 2001 in Whitby Area

Each week in November, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers thoughout White Pine Region brought one non-perishable food item to their regular meeting in White Pine Region's Scouting for Food Challenge.

Most food in Whitby was taken to the Holy Family St. Vincent Society for distribution to needy people in our community.

We challenged West Durham District (Bowmanville, Enniskillen, Hampton, Orono, Maple Grove, Newcastle, Pontypool, Mitchell's Corner, Bethany) that we could gather more pounds per member than they could. For our first drive, they outdid us, but we'll see what happens as we do it again.

Groups and sections throughout White Pine Region be donating food at their meetings once again during the month of February, 2001. Remember, the idea is to bring in one item per week from each adult and youth. There will be a box at Whitby Area's February Council meeting for those who do not belong to a group and who would like to bring in donations.

The Holy Family St. Vincent Society has agreed to accept our food donations and get it distributed to the needy. Drop-off for February is Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to noon. You may may also hand in food to a charity of your choice. In any case, it is very important that the donated items are weighed before you hand them in.

For groups who wish to hand in food donations at Holy Family Church, people there will accept your donations on March 3rd from 10 a.m. to noon.

For more information on what kind of food to donate and advice on program tie-ins for your section, check out the Food Challenge page on the regional website.

There are general suggestions for suitable food on the the White Pine Region Food Challenge page, but since our food is being distributed in Whitby, local needs are the most important. The top 10 items needed in Whitby — not in any special order — are as follows:

All items should come in boxes and be brought to the side door of Holy Family Church at 91 Ribblesdale Drive — just west along Manning from Anderson.
