JAMBOREES

The Canadian Jamboree is coming up fast, and the youth registration is basically at the capacity mark, but more leaders are still needed on Offers of Service for the Jamboree staff. If you can help, please contact District Commissioner Jack (430-0641) for a form. You'll be in good company as there are about 130 participants confirmed from Whitby District. (There are only about 420 among all the other districts in our region put together.)

There will be a meeting on March 25 at Henry Street High School for all groups going to CJ. Offers of Service volunteers are also invited. We are making jackets available ($48 + $5.75 for your name embroidered on the front). If you're going to CJ or even if you'd just like an embroidered district jacket, sizing samples will be available. The jacket is a flannel-lined nylon shell, similar to the district jackets worn at the last CJ.

The World Jamboree in Chile is coming only 18 months after CJ, so that it can be held in the South American summer, so the deadline is May 1. Eligible youth are those born between Dec. 31, 1980 and July 1, 1985. Leaders and staff are also needed. The participant fee is $3750, actually less than the fee to the World Jamboree in Korea 8 years before. (How many things do you know of where the price has gone down over 8 years!) Contact the district commissioner for more information.

CHIEF SCOUT'S AWARDS

The final Chief Scout's Awards for Lakeridge Region (before the new region takes over) will be held September 20, which is different than in previous years for us, but is more in line with other regions. That means that applications must be received by the ADC by June 30.

GROUP COMMITTEE TRAINING

We've been trying to organize Group Committee Training for some time and it's set for May 10 (not May 17 as previously advertised) from 9 am to 9:30 pm. This is an excellent opportunity for committee members to learn how to do their job more effectively and would also be great for anyone who will be doing the jobs next year, so keep your future prospects in mind. The cost is $25, but 75% of this can be reimbursed by the district.

The training will be held at the CLOCA office at 100 Whiting Ave., in Oshawa. Call Dave Archer (668-4123) for details.

REGISTRATION

Whitby District registration is officially at 103.9% of last year, so congratulations are in order. Remember that registrations for the remainder of the year (March 1 to October 1) are only $20.75 (plus any group levy you may have.) People who are not registered are not eligible for honours and awards such as 5-year pins and Warrants of Appointment. Be sure all your leaders are registered.

HONOURS & AWARDS -- 30-YEAR PIN

Speaking of honours and awards, yet another Whitby member just received a very special award last month. Viola Tebble, our district registrar and treasurer was presented with her 30-year pin and also Medal of Merit for especially good service to Scouting (our second Medal of Merit in our district this year!). Regional Councillor Marcelle Brunelle (former district council president) and the executive director of the provincial Scout office, Barry Hardaker were on hand for the occasion. Past secretary, Penny Scuse and several members of Viola's family were also on hand, as the letter from the Chief Scout, Governor-General Romeo Leblanc, was read and the medal was presented.

Viola mentioned that she doesn't even have any boys, so her kids haven't been in Scouts, but she obviously enjoys her experience, and she'll no doubt have many more in times to come. Congratulations to Viola Tebble!

If you have leaders who've done a great job, please take the time to write them up. You don't have to wait 30 years and there are awards of various types available. Contact Dave Archer if you need help getting started. Remember, it's up to you! You know the people you work with better than anyone else does.

UPCOMING TRAINING

All groups have also been mailed a list of upcoming courses sponsored by the areas of the Greater Toronto Region Scouts. Check with your council rep or service team member for details.

KUBKARS

The KubKar races went off successfully this years on a compressed schedule. For several years, we've been able to use vacant space at the Whitby Mall, but there was none available this year. We were saved when St. Mark's Church and the 4th Whitby group allowed us to use their basement. We're especially grateful to the church and any of the groups who usually meet there for making this possible.

STANDARD FIRST AID

Whitby District has arranged a First Aid including CPR course with St. John Ambulance for April 19-20. Very few spaces were available. Call the DC (430-0641) to see if there is any space.

CAMP SKILLS COURSE

People have been asking for a Camp Skills course, since you must have a person who has completed this course on any camp. ADC Training Steve Simmons has set April 5 as a date but we must have a minimum number of committed people before the course can go ahead. Please call Steve at 668-6251 or Jack Welsh if you're interested.

SCOUTCRAFT

Participation has been good on the self-taught Scoutcraft I and II badges, mostly from the senior sections. Please contact your service team member if you need to know the requirements.

FALL IS COMING!

I know I'm publishing this on the first day of spring, but it's not too early to think about fall. This years Apple Day badge will be a special one in honour of the 90th anniversary of Scouting. If you want badges for your group, you can get them at the Samac Scout Shop, but they must be ordered by April, 1997.

Also, if you'd like to take you group to the Blue Jays, tickets in 3 sections are available for prices ranging from $2 to $10, half the regular price. This game is Sept. 7, but you'll have to plan now and order soon to get the best seats. Your council rep has the order form.

More special outings are available at Paramount Canada's Wonderland Scouts Canada Family Day on June 7 and an exciting Guiding/Scouting Day at Markham Museum with many varied activities.
